Content Not Updating When Published
It’s reasonable for a user to expect their content to appear on the live website after making a live publish. However, there are times where content doesn’t show up right away, and an F5 on the open tab doesn’t do the trick.
This problem is caused by Caching. Browser caching is when the user’s browser saves and stores certain assets such as HTML files, CSS and images so that they don’t have to be downloaded all over again the next time the site is visited. This can speed up loading times, but it can also mean more has to be done to see the changes than simply reloading or refreshing the page.
One way to fix this problem is to do a hard refresh on the page. To do this with a PC, either hold the Shift button and click the browser’s refresh button, or hold the Ctrl button down and press F5. To do a hard refresh on a Mac, hold the Cmd and Shift buttons and press the “r” key.
Sometimes items like PDF documents which aren’t saved directly to a page will need to be removed another way. Something that can be done to clear the cache on more than one page is to go into the browser’s settings and clear out the browser data. This will often be called something like “Cached Files”, or “Cached Images and Files”.
To clear out the brower data for Google Chrome, go to More tools > Clear browsing data… , then check “Cached images and files”. When the button “Clear Data” is clicked, all cached files will be flushed from the browser.
To clear the browser cache in Firefox, click the three horizontal lines to get to the browser settings. Then, click on the Options item with the cog icon. Then click on the Privacy & Security section on the left and scroll down to the section that says “Cookies and Site Data”. Click “ the Clear Data button and select the two items “Cookies and Site Data” and “Cached Web Content” and click “Clear”.
To clear the browser Cache in Edge, click the three horizontal dots on the top right and select “Settings”. Then, select “Privacy and Services” in the left menu, and click on the “Choose What to Clear” button to the right in the “Clear browsing data” section. In the popup, select “Cached images and files” and in the Time Range on the top, select “All Time”.
